Scoring
- Each section scored 118–132; total score 472–528 (midpoint = 500).
- Median applicant score to MD programmes: ~511; median matriculant: ~512.
- A score of 515+ is considered very competitive at top programmes.
- CARS cannot be substituted and is particularly weighted for some schools.
Preparation strategy
- Average prep time for competitive scorers: 3–6 months, 200–400+ hours.
- Use AAMC official materials (practice exams, Question Packs) as your baseline.
- CARS: read dense, complex prose daily — no shortcut here.
- Biochemistry is the single highest-yield topic across multiple sections.
- End your prep with 3–5 full-length timed practice exams.
- Spaced repetition (Anki) is highly effective for the science content.
